Karl Simons OBE

Karl is a renowned health and safety expert, gaining an OBE in services to mental health during his tenure at Thames Water.

Throughout his career, Karl has been awarded a number of prestigious accolades and non-executive positions including an OBE in the 2020 New Years Honours List for services to mental health policy, SHP’s Most Influential Individual in Health and Safety in 2019, as well as five years on the board of Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP).

A senior executive with over 30 years’ experience in industry, Karl currently supports the UK’s largest Water & Wastewater Utility company supplying 15 million customers. His experience spans from many years working as an Executive & Non -Executive Director working on all five continents in on & offshore oil and gas, minerals, utilities, rail, roads, construction and facilities management industries.

Achievements

  • OBE for services to Mental Health Policy – recommended by the Prime Minister to HM the Queen in the 2020 New Year’s Honours
  • University of Cambridge Lecturer – developed and deliver the Safety, Security & Health syllabus on both their undergraduate and postgraduate / masters engineering programmes at the Department of Engineering.
  • Government Adviser – Advice is regularly sought by Government regarding mental health policy to affect business, having worked closely with the DWP Health Unit & Cabinet Office for many years. Recently this has included the publication of documents such as the Prime Ministers Thriving at Work report; The Business Reporting on Physical & Psychological Disabilities; amendments to The First Aid at Work Guidance to incorporate mental health alongside the established physical health.
  • HM Armed Forces – served as a commander in multiple operational tours of conflict whilst in the British Army, facing extreme levels of adversity and pressurised working environments.
